The colorful “FedEx Cares” truck reached its destination on the campus of Arizona State University (ASU) on May 2, 2007.  FedEx employees loaded this truck with Special Olympics Arizona sports equipment and materials required to host the 2007 Summer Games.

This was just part of a successful weekend that brought over 3,000 athletes, coaches, families, sponsors, donors and fans to ASU to enjoy the experience of Special Olympics.

The “FedEx Cares” truck and the loading process was only the beginning for FedEx volunteers.  On Saturday, May 5th, purple shirts invaded the Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games with over 80 FedEx employees supporting Special Olympics athletes at the softball throw and track competitions.  They did it all…staging athletes, measuring and timing, cheering, escorting athletes to the awards presentations and assisting in the awards area.  They were everywhere they needed to be and more.  A solid volunteer effort by these employees tied to a solid contribution of in-kind shipping services and manpower.

Robert Cumberbatch, FedEx‘s point-of-contact for Special Olympics Arizona stated, “…FedEx volunteers had a lot of fun and it was a great experience and they were already asking him about the next Special Olympics Arizona event.”   This is exactly what Special Olympics Arizona wants to give to everyone who participates…an experience and an opportunity to do it again.  We are pleased we were able to deliver…just as FedEx did for us. 

Before the Summer Games, FedEx told Special Olympics Arizona they were proud to be a sponsor in 2007 and they salute the outstanding work of Special Olympics in improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.  To the athletes of Special Olympics Arizona they enthusiastically applaud the dedicated efforts of all participants.

Now, it is our turn to salute and thank FedEx for their support and commitment to Special Olympics Arizona, especially our athletes.  We thank you for your sponsorship, your volunteers, your commitment and your desire to support individuals with intellectual disabilities on the athletic field, but more importantly in the community.
